Misappropriation
Appropriation refers to the practice of artists using pre-existing images in their work with little transformation of the original. While technically the terms appropriation and misappropriation can be used interchangeably, I prefer the latter because it has a more subversive connotation. Rather than simply incorporating a pre-existing image into my work, I am more thoroughly transforming it into a work that is in keeping with my own vision while still retaining what is most salient about the original.
